Cos cautious about travel

Cos cautious about travel
CHENNAI: First came the slowdown and then came the swine flu. If the slowdown forced companies to look at their projects and rework their plans,
the flu has not managed to cause much disruption among companies and staff travelling abroad on business.

With more people returning from the US testing positive for the H1N1, Union health minister Ghulam Nabi Azad has urged Indians to avoid travelling abroad till the flu is brought under control. However, business cannot thrive if companies put off meetings abroad or sending their employees overseas to execute projects, especially in tough economic conditions.

With more than $38 billion dollars worth of projects in the IT industry coming from abroad, a majority of IT companies in India have their staff travelling to and fro the US and other countries on a daily basis. With the breakout of the flu, most companies had already issued internal advisories to their employees asking them to take precautions while travelling. Any disruptions in client meetings or essential work being put off could mean even losing out on projects or potential business opportunities.

A Cognizant spokesperson told The Times of India, "Our associates are continuing to undertake essential travel. We have advised them to defer travel in case they develop cold, cough and fever on the day of travel, as passenger screening at various airports may affect their travel schedules. They have also been advised to check with customer teams for local updates before undertaking or deferring travel to affected destinations. Besides, we have shared with them elaborate information about the causes and symptoms of the flu and the recommended health practices to be observed in order to ensure protection."

An employee of an IT company, who returned from the US last month, said business is as usual and people are still undertaking travel. "But a majority of people who travel to and fro Mexico and the US are the ones who are screened. In case, if they have symptoms of cold or cough, they are being advised to take care of themselves and return to work after that," the employee, who did not wish to be named, said.

In fact, two government officials, a joint secretary and an executive director, along with an industry leader left for Italy on Tuesday night on an official visit. "US is the main affected country. But still we will still be taking precautions. These kind of travel plans are unavoidable, whether the flu is there or not," the businessman said.

One trend that is also beginning to emerge across a cross section of the Indian industry is the use of video conferencing and telepresence. A study by Evalueserve, a research company, points out that companies on an average spend $13,600 on travel costs per employee for four trips per year.

"Companies started looking at their cash outflows when the slowdown began and many of them began to cut down on travel costs. After this flu scare began, companies which already have a telepresence and video conferencing set up, are beginning to use them and reduce on site presence of employees. Quite a few companies are saying that if a job or a meeting is not critical for an employee to be present on site, then they are advising them not to travel," Atanu Ghosh, group manager, Evalueserve said.

While companies are focussed on keeping their businesses intact, they are also ensuring that their employees are not being exposed to the threat of contracting the H1N1 flu.

Western Railway to start ‘Go’ cards within a month

Finally, commuters of Western Railway can also hope to use the ‘Mumbai Go’ smart card, which has already been running in the Central Railway. Within a month, the 350 machines at 28 stations of Western Railway will start validating the smart cards that can be used for all public transport modes.

As required by the Railway, Kaizen Automation, developers of the ‘Mumbai Go’ card has linked its two servers to the railways server.

According to Railway sources, the main reason for not starting the ‘Mumbai Go’ card at WR so far was that the WR administration was of the view that every system should be made accountable first to prevent any possibility of fraudulent activities.

The other reason was the poor response to the scheme at Central Railway.

At present, only 400 single journey tickets are being sold per day at CR. So WR did not show interest in the project. But as Kaizen has spent so much to install the machines, sooner or later, WR had to give the green signal.

Another motorman manhandled

Barely 24 hours after a motorman was manhandled at the Borivali station over a change of platform, another faced commuters’ wrath on Tuesday night. However, this time a proper announcement was made before the arrival of the train and the motorman was not at fault. With this incident, the number of manhandling cases has reached 7 this year.

Train no-827 arrived at platform no-7 at Borivali station at 9.40 pm on Tuesday, while its arrival was scheduled at 9.35 pm. Shyam Sunder Gupta, Chief Public Relation officer, Western Railway, said, “On Tuesday night, a proper announcement was made and the train was scheduled to come on platform no-7 only.”

“When the train reached the platform, a few passengers caught hold of motorman GS Tripathi and started pushing him. They took him to the station master and abused him. Only when the train guard entered the office and informed the passengers that the announcement was made and the train was pre-scheduled to arrive on platform no 7, the mob pacified and went back,” said an eyewitness at Borivali station.

But railway officials and staff were shocked after hearing about the incident and said that there was no reason for such a provocation. “This could be politically motivated. A few people take advantage of the situation,” said Priya Sinha, a passenger at Borivali.

“Whatever the truth may be, it is us who face the wrath of the commuters. The WR administration should take some security measures for the motormen,” said a motorman on condition of anonymity.

Western Indian Railway
Headquarters: Mumbai
Divisions: Mumbai Central, Baroda, Ratlam, Ahmedabad, Rajkot, Bhavnagar
Established on: 5 November 1951
The Western Railway (WR) is one amongst the most hustling rail networks in India. Along with headquarters of Central Railway, Mumbai enjoys the authority over this railway network too, being the headquarters sited at Churchgate (Mumbai). The Western Line of the Mumbai suburban railway system is also managed by the Western Railway. The entire zone is segregated into six divisions namely Bhavnagar, Mumbai, Ratlam, Rajkot, Vadodara and Ahmedabad.

As per the dates, Nov' 5 1951 was the golden day when the Western Railway came into being. It was formed by merging numerous state-owned railways together with the Bombay, Baroda & Central India Railway (BB&CI) and the Saurashtra, Rajputana & Jaipur Railways. In Apr' 1867, the first suburban service with steam traction was started in Mumbai. The network was extended till Churchgate by 1870. With 1900, 45 trains were employed in both directions to carry more than 1 million passengers every year.

In 1928, the first electric train on this segment was launched between Churchgate and Borivali. Ratlam - Mumbai Central, Ahmedabad - Vadodara and Palanpur - Ahmedabad are some of the main railway lines of Indian Railways that come under the jurisdiction of Western Railways. WR covers the state of Gujarat, the eastern segment of Rajasthan, a fraction of Western Madhya Pradesh and coast of Maharashtra. Western Railway serves number of ports on the west coast of India.

The prominent ports being Kandla, Okha, Porbandar, Bhavnagar (Gujarat) and Mumbai (Maharashtra), generate decent revenue to the Indian Railways. In Mumbai, the suburban section of the zone sprawls from Churchgate to Dahanu Road covering a distance of 120 kms, while connecting 38 stations. Another prominent fact about Western Railway is that it has the most electrified railroad system of the Indian Railways. Owing to this, Western Railway is the imperative railroad system in India.
